Province codes in the NIK and KK number (11 to 96)

The first two digits of a NIK are the province code. The full list is below. Each province has a page listing its regencies and cities, and each of those lists its districts; those pages are in Indonesian.

Download all codes (CSV)Data: cahyadsn/wilayah, MIT licence; column names in Indonesian.

Have a column of NIKs in Excel and want the region names? Take the first six digits with the formula on the Excel formulas for NIKs page, then match them to this CSV with VLOOKUP.

About these codes

Updated 13 October 2026

  • The codes follow Minister of Home Affairs Decree No. 300.2.2-2430 of 2025 (issued 23 June 2025), which amends Decree No. 300.2.2-2138 of 2025 on assigning and updating administrative region and island codes. It is the latest edition at the time this page was updated.
  • The format is PP.RR.DD: two digits for the province, two for the regency/city, two for the district (kecamatan). In a NIK or family card number the code is written without dots.
  • Regencies use serials 01 to 69, while cities start at 71. That is why Kota Medan is 12.71, not 12.01.
  • This list holds 38 provinces, 514 regencies/cities, and 7,285 districts. Villages are not included.
  • Newly split regions receive new codes. NIKs issued before a split still carry the old code.

Frequently asked questions

What are these region codes used for?

The first six digits of the NIK and KK number, codes on Dukcapil documents, and various government systems that refer to administrative regions. The statistics agency (BPS) uses the same codes with a slightly different format.

Why do cities have codes from 71 up?

The Ministry numbers regencies 01 to 69 and cities from 71. From the regency/city code alone you can tell whether a region is a city or a regency.

Is the region code the same as the postal code?

No. Postal codes are 5 digits issued by Pos Indonesia for mail, and one district can have several. Region codes are 6 digits issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs for population administration, and these are the ones used in NIKs and KK numbers. They are not interchangeable.

How is this different from telephone area codes like 021?

Those are telephone area codes from the telecoms system, such as 021 for Jakarta and 031 for Surabaya. They have nothing to do with the Ministry region codes in a NIK.

Which edition of the region codes is this?

This list follows Minister of Home Affairs Decree No. 300.2.2-2430 of 2025, issued 23 June 2025, which amends Decree No. 300.2.2-2138 of 2025 on assigning and updating region codes. The date this page was last updated is shown under About these codes.

Is there an Excel or PDF version?

The full list of provinces, regencies/cities, and districts downloads as a CSV that opens directly in Excel and Google Sheets. The official PDF is the annex to the decree published by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Are village codes included?

Not yet. This list goes down to the district level because that is what the NIK and KK number use. Village codes add four more digits.
