The 18-digit Indonesian NIP: how to read it, length of service, and retirement
Updated 16 October 2026
Both the civil servant NIP and the PPPK number have 18 digits, and they hold only four things: birth date, first appointment, sex, and a serial. Name, agency, post, rank, and whether the person is still in service are not in the number.
The 18 digits of a civil servant NIP
The layout is set by BKN Head Regulation No. 22 of 2007, with procedures in BKN Head Regulation No. 43 of 2007. The example below is made up.
| Digits | Content | Example 19850317 201003 1 001 |
|---|---|---|
| 1–8 | Birth date as year, month, day | 19850317: born 17 March 1985 |
| 9–14 | Year and month of first appointment as a candidate civil servant (CPNS) | 201003: appointed March 2010 |
| 15 | Sex: 1 male, 2 female | 1: male |
| 16–18 | Serial, starting at 001 for the same first 15 digits | 001 |
The birth date follows the first appointment decree, not the ID card, so it can differ from the date in the person's NIK. Unlike the NIK, a NIP has no region code and does not add 40 to a woman's birth day.
PPPK numbers differ in digits 9 to 14
Under BKN Regulation No. 1 of 2019, Article 29(5), digits 9 to 12 of a PPPK number are the year of first appointment and digits 13 and 14 count the work agreements, starting at 21. So digits 13 and 14 tell the two apart: 01 to 12 means a civil servant NIP, 21 or higher a PPPK number. The made-up 19900805 2025 21 2 003 is a woman born 5 August 1990, appointed in 2025 under her first agreement. The month of a PPPK appointment is not in the number.
Length of service and retirement
Service for pension purposes counts from the candidate civil servant start date (TMT CPNS), the month in digits 9 to 14. The official figure can differ, because recognised prior service is added and unpaid leave is subtracted. The retirement age depends on the post, not the rank: 58 for administrative posts and junior, first-level, and skills functional posts; 60 for senior executives, middle-level functional posts, and teachers; 65 for principal functional posts and lecturers. A civil servant leaves at the end of the month the age is reached and the pension starts on the 1st of the next month. The post is not in the NIP, so the tool shows all three scenarios.
What this tool cannot do
It reads the structure of the number only. It cannot confirm that a NIP is registered or active, show a name, or find a NIP from a name. A 9-digit number is an old NIP from before 2008 that holds only an agency code and a serial. For test data, use the dummy NIP generator.
